digital transformation is changing the manufacturing world

20/2/2019

With the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation, the entire manufacturing industry is changing nowadays. "Industry 4.0", "Smart Manufacturing", "Internet of Things (IoT)", these are just a few coined words trending in the manufacturing sector that will very significantly change the operations (in a good way) in your factory or warehouse.
The real question is - are you prepared for this change?. Many manufacturing companies are still using a "legacy system" and are missing out on important features that will not only improve their efficiency but also simplify the whole process. With the right tools, manufacturing companies are getting a huge competitive advantage - maximising the production efficiency on the factory floor and at the same time assisting the admin team with data entry.

One of the most important things to consider in a manufacturing business is planning, you need the right smarts to help you plan your order, your procurement and your lead times. Through the right tools, your ERP will be able to automatically work out your demand (based on your sales orders), take into consideration your minimum, maximum, reorder levels and lead times in order to work out the best times to order raw materials but also create your manufacturing orders automatically. Planning is a complex challenge in many businesses, but with the new technology out there, planning is an automated and cognitive process.

IoT is another area which improves the process by reducing manual entry and minimising human error. Modern systems includes interfaces that recognise steps in your production line so that the operation is automatically marked and tracked on your ERP. This means that your production is reflected into your ERP immediately, keeping your stock levels for both your finished product and raw materials up-to-date at any point in time or even record the times spent doing the work so that your labour times are recorded accordingly.
